Quang Nam

Quang Nam, a former province in central Vietnam, captivates visitors with its rich historical tapestry, cultural diversity, and natural beauty. Steeped in history, it was once the heartland of the ancient Champa Kingdom, now observed via the remnants of Cham architecture. Join Asia King Travel as we explore what this land has to offer.
Quang Nam is on Vietnam's World Heritage Route
Ancient civilizations, colonial rule, wartime conflicts, and post-war reconstruction are all part of the fascinating and varied history of the former Quang Nam Province. The Hindu temples at My Son are among the many relics of the Champa Kingdom, which was once a significant part of Quang Nam's landscape.
My Son Sanctuary
With UNESCO-recognized sites like Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary conserving its development history, this area is a testament to resiliency. Agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and a thriving tourism industry are the main drivers of its expanding economy.
In 2025, under the administrative reform initiated by the Vietnamese government, Quang Nam Province was merged with Da Nang Province to form a new Da Nang City, with a total area of nearly 12,000 km².

Quang Nam experiences pleasant temperatures year-round. However, the best time to visit is generally from February to August, which falls in the dry season.
Beautiful weather in Quang Nam
During the rainy season, from September to December, the central region, including Quang Nam, often experiences heavy rains and storms that can affect your travel plans.
To the south of the former Da Nang Province is the former Quang Nam Province. You can take a bus, train, or airplane to get to this location.
If you choose to travel by air, you will land at Da Nang International Airport and then drive the remaining distance to Quang Nam. You can make a stop at Tra Kieu Station or Da Nang Station if you're traveling by train.
Traveling to Quang Nam by train
The train ride from Hanoi to Hoi An takes around 15 to 20 hours. It might be a bit longer than other options, but it’s definitely worth a try since you’ll catch some amazing coastal views along the way.
Quang Nam is truly a gem, offering the perfect blend of culture, history, and nature. The UNESCO-listed Hoi An Ancient Town is often hailed as one of the most beautiful towns in Asia, and this reputation is well deserved. Not far away, the My Son Sanctuary, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases the architecture of the ancient Champa Kingdom through its impressive temple ruins.

If you are drawn to the wild natural landscapes of this region, the Cham Islands, recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, have gorgeous beaches and coral reefs. You can also visit the local fishing villages and see for yourself how daily life is unfolding here. All these wonders make Quang Nam a must-have stop on any Central Vietnam tour.
Chicken rice has long been a famous specialty of Quang Nam, especially in Tam Ky and Hoi An Town. With its golden turmeric-tinted rice, ivory chicken meat, green papaya and Vietnamese coriander, and purple shallots, Tam Ky chicken rice is a visual feast.
Tam Ky chicken rice
Tam Ky chicken, a free-range chicken with firm meat and thin skin, is the main ingredient. Perfectly cooked rice is served with tender chicken, pickled vegetables, herbs, and a bowl of savory garlic fish sauce that is a must-have.
Quang Nam’s ram tom (shrimp spring rolls) are distinct from those in Binh Dinh or Quang Ngai. Quang Nam rolls are neatly wrapped without the shrimp tails sticking out, and the flavor is noticeably different.
The dish is at its best when eaten with fresh herbs, rice paper, and dipped in fermented soybean sauce or sweet-and-sour fish sauce.
When visiting Hoi An Ancient Town, don’t miss banh mi for breakfast. The banh mi here is often called the “best in Vietnam,” with a wide variety of fillings that are customizable. What makes Hoi An’s banh mi special is its perfectly crisp yet light bread, generously packed fillings, and a balance of both color and flavor.
