About Ti Top Island

History of Ti Top Island

The island long ago was known under local names such as Cat Nang or Hong Thap Tu, and at times it was even called "Cemetery Island" or "Red Cross Island." It was named this gloomy name as a result of a tragic shipwreck in 1905 when a French cargo ship wrecked in the Con Coc lagoon area, and the crewmen who died were said to have been buried on the island.

Years passed, and local fishermen steered clear of the island due to its sinister legend. Now, however, Ti Top Island is both a natural wonder and living history, with tourists pouring in to view it due to its attractiveness and history.

Location and Geography

Ti Top Island is found in Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam. It is found approximately 7 to 8 kilometers southeast of Bai Chay tourist wharf (or Bai Chay Wharf) within Ha Long City. Other references position it roughly 14 kilometers from Bai Chay Harbour. The island is part of the archipelago group encircling Cua Luc Bay, with some nearby attractions like Sung Sot Cave, Bo Hon Island, Dam Nam, and Dam Bac.

Despite its small size, some 3.7 hectares (0.037 km²) according to different sources, the island has steep slopes and a gentle shoreline. The summit extends to about 110 meters high, some 400-450 steps to a view of breathtaking scenery. The coast line features a moon-shaped (crescent) white beach that hugs the island foot.

Best Time to Visit Ti Top Island

The best time to come on a Vietnam tour and explore Ti Top Island is from April to July, when the weather is sunny, warm, and ideal for bathing and outdoor games. It is the peak season and hence the tourist season, so expect the hustle and bustle and higher prices for services, but it is also the time that allows the most vibrant life on the island. If you prefer less crowds and gentler weather, the shoulder season of March to April and September to October is perfect, with blue skies and calm seas.

October to February is Ha Long Bay's wet and colder period, and although the island is open, activities such as swimming or kayaking may be curtailed by stormy seas or typhoons. To enjoy both worlds, go during the shoulder season when you get to enjoy both good weather and a less crowded environment.

How to get there?

Ti Top Island is located in the middle of Ha Long Bay and therefore can only be reached by sea. Most visitors take a Ha Long Bay tour cruise with a Vietnam travel guide to reach the island, which departs from principal ports such as Bai Chay, Tuan Chau, or Ha Long City. Ti Top is generally part of the program of cruises along with other attractions such as Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave.

Famous Activities on Ti Top Island

Hike to the Summit and Enjoy Panoramic Views

One of the highlights of activity on Ti Top Island is climbing to its summit. A stone staircase with about 400 to 450 steps leads travelers from the beach to the summit of the island, which is around 110 meters above sea level. The ascent is only approximately 15 to 20 minutes at your pace, and although it is somewhat tiresome, the scenery from the summit is well worth it.

From the peak, you enjoy a 360-degree view on your Ha Long Bay tour, its emerald waters and countless limestone karsts stretched out before you as far as the eye can see. Most travelers choose to hike up in the early morning or late afternoon so that they will be able to take the best photos under soft natural light, especially during sunrise or sunset when the bay looks most magical.

Relax and Swim on the Crescent Beach

At the bottom of Ti Top Island lies its most famous natural feature, a crescent-shaped white sandy beach that hugs the shoreline. The beach is small but untouched, with smooth white sand and calm waves that provide an excellent beach for swimming and sunbathing. Unlike most of the rocky land in Ha Long Bay, this beach possesses safe swimming because of the shallow and calm waters.

One can even rent lounge chairs and umbrellas too in order to sunbathe, or simply stroll along the crescent-shaped beach in peaceful contemplation. Since it is one of the few sandy beaches found in Ha Long Bay, Ti Top's beach is especially favored by families, couples, and everyone who wants to take a breather in between sightseeing tours.

Try Exciting Water Sports and Activities

Other than swimming and hiking, Ti Top Island provides much more for your water sports-addled holiday. The activity most favorite among tourists is kayaking in the Ha Long Bay tour, which allows you to kayak through the island, uncover the mysteries of the bay, and appreciate the beauty of Ha Long from the surface of the ocean.

And there are also more exhilarating, speedboat tours or towed buoy alternatives such as banana boat rides for the adventure-seekers, bringing fun and excitement to groups of friends or families. Snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding are also possible in suitable conditions, giving visitors other ways to explore the transparent water.
