Vietnam sets the goal to become a Halal-friendly destination
First of all, “Halal” is an Arabic word that means “lawful” or “permissible.” It refers to what is considered acceptable according to Islamic law for Muslims. Halal tourism is a specific form of tourism designed for Muslim travelers, which requires certain services, such as food, accommodation, and entertainment, to comply with Shariah law. Vietnam is a non-Muslim country. However, with the goal of turning tourism into a leading economic sector, the Vietnamese government and policymakers have established strategies to develop the Halal tourism industry with a vision toward 2030. Accordingly, Vietnam demonstrates both the potential and the intention to become a Halal-friendly destination for Muslim tourists.
First, regarding Halal food, Vietnamese cuisine has favorable conditions for adaptation to Halal standards. Traditional Vietnamese dishes commonly use ingredients such as rice, vegetables, fish, and natural seasonings, along with cooking techniques that preserve the natural flavors of ingredients, which generally comply with Halal requirements.
Therefore, Vietnamese cuisine has strong potential for customization to meet the needs of Muslim travelers, allowing them to enjoy local food while maintaining their religious beliefs. In addition, the number of eateries catering specifically to Muslim customers has been increasing in major cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Second, regarding prayer facilities, prayer is an essential religious practice for Muslims. Besides some five-star hotels that provide dedicated prayer rooms (musalla), in common accommodations, Muslim travelers can request assistance from hotel staff in advance to arrange suitable prayer spaces. Vietnamese people are generally friendly and respectful, and they are often willing to offer help when requested.
Third, Vietnam provides agricultural and rural tourism models that align well with the preferences of Muslim travelers, who often favor gentle, modest, and nature-based travel experiences.
Last but not least, Vietnam is a convenient destination for travelers from Muslim-majority countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. Besides being a political and economic center, Hanoi is also among the top destinations for experiencing Halal-friendly travel in Vietnam. Hanoi is the only city in northern Vietnam with a mosque, Al-Noor Mosque, which serves as both a spiritual and symbolic attraction, connecting the local Muslim community with residents and visitors. Additionally, there are several luxury accommodations, including InterContinental Landmark 72, JW Marriott Hanoi, and Melia Hanoi, that offer Halal meals upon request.
On June 1, the Hanoi Department of Tourism organized a seminar entitled “Developing Halal Tourism in Hanoi – Vietnam”. The event introduced several initiatives specifically for Hanoi, including developing a network of Halal-certified restaurants and hotels, designing specialized Halal tours, promoting experiential agricultural tourism models that meet Halal standards, and training personnel with knowledge of Islamic culture and customs. These efforts promise a more suitable and comfortable travel experience for Muslim visitors to Vietnam.

Da Nang is one of the most dynamic tourist cities in Vietnam, with many favorable conditions supporting the development of Halal tourism in Vietnam. In 2025, the city accelerated its connectivity with potential markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Middle East, and CIS countries. Notably, the Dubai–Da Nang route was officially launched by Emirates Airline on June 2, 2025. Local authorities and travel agencies have been coordinating closely to ensure high-quality experiences for international visitors.
Currently, Da Nang has more than 800 establishments offering Muslim-friendly food services. These include approximately 40 Halal and Indian restaurants, over 10 Halal-certified establishments, more than 100 vegetarian restaurants, and over 500 seafood restaurants and eateries with menus and service practices suitable for Muslim customers. Customer satisfaction rates, especially regarding the cuisine, were very high thanks to its adherence to stringent culinary and service quality standards.

Da Nang is a potential destination for Halal tourism
Ho Chi Minh City is not only an international trade hub with over 50 direct flights connecting Asia and the Middle East via Tan Son Nhat Airport, but also has a community of over 30,000 Muslim followers, the majority of whom are Cham, mainly concentrated in Binh Dong and Ben Thanh wards. That also explains why there are numerous mosques and other smaller prayer sites (surao) throughout the city.
Regarding cuisine, over 200 establishments in Ho Chi Minh City have achieved Halal certification, from 5-star hotel buffets to international F&B chains like KFC and Pizza Hut, all of which have their own kitchens to ensure strict adherence to procedures. With a history of more than 80 years, this mosque is imbued with Islamic architectural features influenced by South Asia, including lotus-bud-shaped domes and pointed arched doorways resembling Bodhi leaves. Covering an area of nearly 2,000 square meters, the Jamia Al-Musulman Mosque serves as an important religious space for Muslim worshippers, where they gather to pray and express their devotion to Allah.

The Jamiul Islamiyah Mosque, also known as the Nancy Mosque, is one of the main mosques in Ho Chi Minh City. Located amid the city’s crowded streets, the mosque stands out with its distinctive Islamic architecture and striking green exterior. There is a sizable Muslim community living around this mosque. You can also find some halal food like Pho muslim around this area if you are willing to walk around the back alleyways.
Al-Noor Mosque is the only Islamic place in northern Vietnam. In 1885, the Indian community funded to build this place to meet their religious demands. The mosque faces west towards Mecca, featuring Indian architecture with domes, arched doorways, and minarets. Until now, Al-Noor Mosque has been the sacred destination for Muslims. Hundreds of people come here every day, especially on Friday at noon, to pray.
