Information about Thai Nguyen

History

Thai Nguyen's history is inextricably entwined with the struggle for Vietnamese independence. In 1917, it was the site of the Thai Nguyen rebellion, where prison guards and inmates had briefly taken over the city and formed one of the most prominent early uprisings against French colonial rule. Known as ATK (An Toan Khu), the progressive base area was the capital of the resistance movement and a crucial site during the First Indochina War.

Since reunification in 1975, Thai Nguyen has emerged as an industrial and educational center of northern Vietnam. Thai Nguyen City, previously a small township, officially became a class-1 city in 1962. Today, it is the political, cultural, and economic center of the province and the location of Thai Nguyen University, one of the country's biggest centers of higher learning.

How to get there

Travel to this place is not difficult, thanks to its close proximity to Hanoi and well-developed transport system. The Hanoi-Thai Nguyen Expressway, completed in 2014, allows commuters to travel roughly 70 km in just about an hour. The roads are also in a good state, and public and private vehicles make regular trips with the North of Vietnam tour.

For others arriving from further afield, Noi Bai International Airport is about 50 kilometers away with domestic as well as international flights. Thai Nguyen also has railway links and is within a reasonable distance of Hai Phong port, opening the region to tourism and trade.
