Bau Trang looks like an oasis in the middle of a desert
Bau Trang was once a large freshwater lake, but later, a sand ridge formed across it, dividing the lake into two parts known by locals as Bau Ong and Bau Ba. Bau Ba is the larger of the two and is home to vast lotus fields, which is why it's also known as Bau Sen (Lotus Lake). The presence of these lotus plants adds a unique charm to the already beautiful landscape.
Due to the coastal terrain and strong winds blowing year-round, sea sand is constantly carried inland, gradually building up into soaring white sand dunes that curve gracefully around the lakes. This natural formation process has created a landscape that is both breathtaking and serene - a rare meeting point between desert and freshwater lakes along the coast.

Bau Trang and the surrounding sand dunes are located in Hoa Thang Commune, Lam Dong Province. Once part of the former Binh Thuan Province, the lake is just 65 kilometers northeast of the famous Phan Thiet beach. You can reach Phan Thiet either by train or by road. From this charming coastal city, head north via Vo Nguyen Giap Street onto Provincial Road 716. Just follow the scenic coastal route, and you’ll arrive at Bau Trang. With such an easy journey, it would be a real shame to miss this incredible spot.
If you're in Nha Trang or Phan Rang and want to visit, simply head south along National Highway 1A, then turn left onto Provincial Road 716 at Phan Ri Cua Commune. Follow the road straight, and you'll reach your destination.

The weather along the South Central Coast of Vietnam is dry and sees little rainfall throughout the year, with minimal seasonal changes. That means you can plan a visit to Bau Trang at any time that suits you best.

Visiting hours: Plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon, between 5:30–7:00 AM or 4:00–6:00 PM. During these hours, the sunlight is softer, creating beautiful shadows on the sand without being too harsh. Avoid the time frame from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, as this is when the sun is at its strongest. The sand can become scorching hot, increasing the risk of sunburn, heat exhaustion, or foot burns.
Sun protection items are essential when visiting Bau Trang
Stay Safe: Avoid climbing overly steep sand dunes to prevent falls or exhaustion. If you’re driving an ATV, jeep, or going sandboarding, wear lightweight clothing and sports shoes. Always follow the safety instructions and avoid speeding or navigating steep, dangerous slopes.
Bring Food and Water: Carry plenty of water with you, as the intense heat can quickly drain your energy. It’s also a good idea to bring some snacks, since there are very few food stalls around the dunes. Only a few vendors selling drinks may be available.
