Khon Kaen Silk Festival (officially the “International Silk Festival, Phuk Siao Tradition & Charity Fair”) is an annual cultural event in Khon Kaen Province. Khon Kaen Silk Festival 2025 will take place from 29 November to 10 December and not just about promoting silk, the event will bring you so many activities to fully immerse yourself in Isan culture.

Khon Kaen Silk Festival is one of the province’s largest annual celebrations
What makes Khon Kaen silk truly special is the mut mee technique. Artisans tie the silk threads in sections, dye them, dry them under the sun, and only when the threads are placed on the loom do the real patterns reveal themselves.
Some designs mimic flowers and leaves, while others depict the sacred Naga serpent. Yet all the motifs share one thing in common: the simplicity and rustic charm of the Isan region.
The colors of Khon Kaen silk are also very distinctive. Locals still prefer natural dyes made from tree bark, roots, indigo leaves, or various flowers. As a result, the hues of the silk are always gentle on the eyes, sometimes carrying a hint of imperfection, but this “imperfection” creates a one-of-one handcrafted beauty.
Today, Khon Kaen silk appears in many places: on performance costumes, in modern fashion stores, and even in luxury souvenirs for travelers. Yet wherever it is found, it retains its inherent softness and elegance. This is why Khon Kaen silk spreads its charm so quickly.
And to honor and promote this hometown silk, the Khon Kaen Silk Festival was established. Now, 45 years since its first edition, each festival continues to bring visitors the strong sense of community of the local people.
When attending the festival, visitors feel as if they are stepping into a “living museum” of Thai silk. Traditional looms are set up right in the heart of the festival space. You can witness firsthand the process of traditional Isan silk weaving. It’s also a rare opportunity to buy handcrafted silk directly from the artisans and to touch the art as it comes to life.

The intricate patterns are woven entirely by hand
The festival atmosphere is always lively thanks to parades and cultural performances. Colorfully decorated floats, graceful dances, and music create a bustling scene that still retains a strong local character. You can easily immerse yourself in the colors, sounds, and joy of the festival, experiencing a side of Khon Kaen that is different from typical tourist spots.
When night falls, everyone heads to Ton Tann Market to keep the excitement going. Stalls selling handicrafts, local dishes, grilled food, and Isan specialties awaken every sense.
The lively yet welcoming atmosphere, the aromas of traditional foods, and the sound of mor lam music make you feel that choosing to visit Khon Kaen at this time of the year was one of the best decisions you could have made.

Khon Kaen Silk Festival 2025 will take place over 12 days, from November 29 to December 10. This period coincides with the province’s peak travel season, so a large number of visitors are expected. The cool weather and minimal rainfall will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable festival.
Another highlight is the “World Silk & Craft” exhibition area, located in an air-conditioned dome in the center of Khon Kaen. Here, buyers can view, try on, and purchase premium silk products from artisans not only from Thailand but also from other Southeast Asian countries. In 2024, the festival featured around 40 booths from local silk artisans and about 10 international booths.

There will be parades along the streets of Khon Kaen in the afternoon and evening
During the day, you can stroll through the craft booths, buying high-quality mut mee silk or unique silk-made souvenirs. As night falls, soft lights glow from the stalls, the aroma of local food fills the air, and traditional music fills the air. The night market becomes a cultural intersection of commerce and community joy.
High-quality handicrafts cannot be produced in factories filled with hundreds of automated machines, they must come from traditional craft villages. If you want to understand the silk culture of the Isan region fully, there is no better place to visit than these villages, where you can witness each skillful step of the artisans firsthand.
Not far from the center of Khon Kaen, Chonnabot District is known as the “capital of mut mee”. Every house in the village has a loom set up in the yard or living room. When visiting a home, artisans happily demonstrate the steps of creating a silk cloth.

You will get to witness firsthand the process of creating silk from scratch in Chonnabot
What’s special is that you can also buy silk directly from the weavers, choosing mut mee pieces with intricate patterns and natural colors. Some artisans are even willing to guide visitors in dyeing or trying a few weaving passes, allowing everyone to feel the patience and skill behind each piece of silk.
Besides Chonnabot, small villages like Ban Hua Fai and Ban Ton are also hidden gems of Khon Kaen silk craftsmanship. These craft villages not only preserve cultural values but also produce silk products that have become specialties of the region.
Upon arriving in Khon Kaen, you can check into a hotel near the city center for convenient access. In the afternoon, start exploring the festival at the silk and craft booths, where artisans demonstrate traditional mut mee weaving.
The lively festival atmosphere will quickly familiarize you with the surroundings. In the evening, stroll through the festival night market, enjoy local specialties like sticky rice, som tam, grilled chicken, and pick up some souvenirs.
Early in the morning, join the Phuk Siao ceremony, where visitors and locals tie colorful threads around their wrists as a symbol of friendship and unity. In the afternoon, enjoy the parade of vibrantly decorated floats. In the evening, you can combine a visit to the night market with exploring silk booths from different countries.

Don’t forget to enjoy mor lam music every evening
Spend the day exploring the outskirts, visiting Chonnabot silk village, the center of the famous mut mee silk production. Here, you can observe the entire silk weaving process, talk with artisans, and even try a few weaving passes or thread dyeing. This is the most authentic way to understand the cultural value of Khon Kaen silk. In the afternoon, return to Khon Kaen and continue exploring the festival booths if you wish.
On this day, you can choose to visit either 2 most famous attractions of Khon Kaen. Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon is a temple with impressive architecture and panoramic views of the city, or Ubolratana Dam, a large, tranquil lake perfect for a picnic.
