Koh Rong, a captivating island nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, beckons travelers with its pristine beauty and tropical allure. Situated approximately 25 kilometers off the coast of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, Koh Rong stands as the country's second-largest island, boasting an expanse of around 78 square kilometers. Its landscape is a mosaic of dense tropical jungles, coconut groves, and idyllic white-sand beaches. Visitors are drawn to the crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a plethora of outdoor activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, and jungle trekking. As the sun sets, Koh Rong comes alive with beach bars and parties, providing a lively nightlife scene. Koh Rong has become a popular destination, prompting efforts to balance tourism with environmental conservation.

From 1979 to 2000, the island fell under the governance of the Navy authority, which held authority within a five-mile radius around Koh Rong. However, since 2000, the Department of Fisheries has taken on the primary role as the government agency responsible for managing living aquatic resources in the region. This involves collaborative efforts with local authorities, communities, fishermen, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to oversee the sustainable management and conservation of resources.

In recent decades, Koh Rong has undergone a notable transformation, evolving from a relatively untouched island into a sought-after tourist destination. The surge in tourism has prompted the development of infrastructure and accommodations across the island. It's important to acknowledge that while Koh Rong may not boast the same historical significance as some other regions in Cambodia, its transition into a popular tourist spot represents a significant aspect of its more recent history.
