Cambodia Independence Day is a national holiday observed annually on 9 November. The date commemorates Cambodia's Declaration of Independence from France and the founding of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces on 9 November 1953. It is a day of great significance for the Cambodian people, as well as for supporters of freedom and justice against oppression around the world.
France had controlled Cambodia since 1863, along with several other Asian territories. This expansion began after global powers at the time had lost many of their colonies in the Americas, such as Louisiana, which was sold to the United States, and Canada, which came under British control. To strengthen its influence, France expanded its colonial ambitions into Africa and Asia.
In Asia, France targeted southern China and the countries of Indochina, including Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Siam (modern-day Thailand). In these regions, Catholic missionaries had long been active, quietly spreading Christianity among local populations.

There were multiple benefits for France in controlling Cambodia. First, the Mekong River offered a strategic route into southern China. Second, it allowed France to eliminate potential threats, particularly from Siam, which had British backing.
To achieve national independence, Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk pursued diplomatic strategies to end French colonial rule. In 1949, he demanded that France terminate the 1863 and 1884 protectorate agreements. That same year, he signed an agreement on independence, which France later officially recognized.
From 1952 to 1953, King Sihanouk continued to consolidate Cambodia’s full sovereignty. On 9 November 1953, Cambodia officially gained full independence from France, marking the end of French colonial rule. The Cambodian people hailed him as the “National Hero and Father of Independence.”

To commemorate this achievement, the Independence Monument was constructed and inaugurated in 1958 during the reign of King Norodom Sihanouk’s father, King Norodom Suramarit (1955–1960).
Every year, Cambodia Independence Day is a very special and joyous occasion for the entire nation. It stands as proof of the Khmer people’s success in overcoming colonization. The celebration takes place across the country, with the most significant ceremony held at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh.
In addition to the main ceremony on 9 November, on the afternoon of 8 November, senior officials from various ministries and institutions pay homage to the late King Norodom Sihanouk at his memorial pavilion near the Independence Monument to honor his merits in leading the country to independence from France.

Ceremonies held at the Independence Monument
Usually, the most important formal ceremony is held on the morning of the 9th, with the roads around the Independence Monument closed to provide space for the event. The entire ceremony would be broadcast on national television and radio so that people across the country can watch it.
At night, fireworks will be launched over the Chatomuk River in front of the Royal Palace, attracting large crowds who gather both in front of the palace and in the Chroy Changvar area across the river.
In 2025, November 9 will mark the 72nd Anniversary of Cambodia Independence Day and the Founding Day of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. According to the official notice, the celebrations will be held on November 9 and 11, 2025, at the Independence Monument, which is located between Daun Penh and Chamkarmon Districts in Phnom Penh.

For safety and logistical reasons, the city administration will also temporarily restrict all vehicle movement from 5:00 a.m. until the end of Cambodia Independence Day celebrations. This will take effect on the following roads:
Major boulevards across Phnom Penh will be decorated with royal portraits, flags, and celebratory banners. There will also be balloon and dove releases symbolizing peace, along with fireworks displays on the nights of November 9 and 11, 2025.

Since some roads will be closed during Cambodia Independence Day, it’s best to steer clear of those areas.
