History

The name "Lao Cai" originates from an old market called "Lao Nhai", meaning "Old Town". Many historians believe that this land was the birthplace of An Duong Vuong, the founder of the Au Lac kingdom. During the feudal period, Lao Cai is a significant Red River trading hub. The province of Lao Cai was officially established in 1907, and the ancient name was adopted as the province's name.

Throughout the 20th century, the province underwent several administrative divisions and mergers with Lai Chau province. The last boundary adjustment took place in 2003. In 2020, Sapa District was upgraded to Sapa Town. Currently, the province comprises 1 city, 1 town, and 7 districts.

Natural Conditions

Hoang Lien Son mountain range traverses Lao Cai, giving rise to numerous high peaks. Most notably Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina at 3,143 meters. 107 rivers and streams flow from these mountains, some over 100 kilometers long.

Lao Cai shares the tropical monsoon climate common to Northern Vietnam. However, due to its mountainous terrain, the weather is often complex and changeable. Daily temperature fluctuations can be significant, and frost can occur in some areas. In Sapa, visitors can experience all four seasons in a single day. Fog also usually occurs across the province.

Best time to visit

Despite the variable weather, Lao Cai generally enjoys a pleasant climate. The province is an ideal year-round tourist destination. From January to March, the province is adorned with beautiful plum blossoms. A month after the seasonal transition, a sea of clouds envelops the mountains, creating a magical atmosphere for visitors taking photos.

What to eat in Lao Cai

Thang co

Thang co is a traditional dish of the H'mong people, originating from Yunnan Province, China. It has been adopted by the Kinh, Dao, and Tay ethnic groups. Traditionally cooked with horse meat, thang co has since been adapted to include beef, buffalo, and pork. Additionally, it contains small pieces of animal offal and herbs.

Thang co is initially quite striking with its strong aroma of stewed meat and offal, which can be off-putting to many. Similar to durian, some people may be hesitant to try it at first. However, once they have had the chance to familiarize themselves with this unique flavor, it can be quite addictive.

Salmon

The cool year-round climate and cold winters, sometimes even with snow, have created an ideal environment for salmon. The salmon in Lao Cai is of comparable quality and color to any imported salmon in Vietnam. The salmon meat is firm and tender, with a lean texture, a bright pink color. It can be prepared in many ways, from frying and steaming to grilling and even eating raw.

There's nothing quite like enjoying a glass of warming wine and a plate of fresh salmon on a chilly day. It's a delightful experience that transports you to a colder climate without ever leaving here.

Sour Pho in Bac Ha

Sour pho is a signature dish of the Tay people. Unlike regular pho noodles, sour pho noodles have a brown color due to being made from a special local red rice. The sour broth is also made from different ingredients to create a unique flavor. Vegetables, dried bamboo shoots are thinly sliced and pickled to make the broth.
