Tanah Rata, which literally means "flat land" in Malay, was established in the 1920s as a hill station during British colonial times. Because of its cool climate and rich soil, the region thus became attractive for the British to cultivate tea, among other crops. From then on, tea plantations were developed and remain a focal point of the area to date.
Tanah Rata soon developed into the administrative and social center of the Cameron Highlands, where colonial officers, traders, and planters retreated to from the sweltering lowlands. Many of those original buildings-the Tudor-style bungalows, old tea houses-remain standing today, adding to the quaint and nostalgic charm of Tanah Rata.

In due course, the place came to be known as one of the major tourist destinations, with the mix of old colonial charm and modern ultramodern amenities fitting for the history buff, not to mention the lover of nature in its beauty.
One of the most iconic sights in Cameron Highlands, Boh Tea Plantation is a short drive from Tanah Rata. This sprawling tea estate is one of Malaysia's largest producers of tea, with endless green bushes of it cascading down the rolling hills.
It serves as a spot where visitors can tour the tea factory and understand various processes of making tea, as well as have a sampling of the teas that have been freshly brewed just then in the café overlooking the plantations. The Boh Tea Plantation boasts endless attractions that range from unique tea plantation culture to picturesque landscapes.

The Cameron Lavender Garden is a surprise to behold, it is a place anyone would wish to visit for full indulgence in a flower wonderland. Lavenders, purple-colored blooms, flowers of many colors, and well-manicured gardens-you name them.
Besides the wonderful plants in the garden, there is a mini amusement park, strawberry picking, and souvenir shops that sell various products of lavender. Never forget to try some lavender-flavored ice cream as you take a walk in its scented pathways.

The Camellia Garden of Tan's is a nature lover's little heaven, offering the much-needed break from the jam-packed town. This botanical garden boasts a variety of camellia plants, orchids, ferns, and rare flora in the area.
The owner, Mr. Tan, makes it a point to enlighten them about the plants, making the place not only beautiful but quite informative too. It can be used as a great hub for walking, carrying out nature photography, or just relaxing amidst lush greenery.

Plenty of trails are to be found around Tanah Rata, among them, Trail 10 leads to the Robinson Waterfall. The hike takes you through thick jungle terrain, catching glimpses and sounds of native wildlife, exotic birds, and the gurgling sound of cascading waters.
Refreshing Robinson Waterfall, featuring multi tier cascades, is ideal for taking pictures or simply cooling off with a splash in the natural pools. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and bring water as the trail can be steep and slippery.

Located just a short drive away in the neighboring town of Brinchang, Sam Poh Temple is one of the largest Buddhist temples in the Cameron Highlands. With riot colors, carved intricate carvings, and peaceful courtyards, this temple is a nice sight to see.
They go for a walk in the grounds of the temple, meditate amidst the serenity, and get a panoramic view of the hills surrounding them. This temple signifies the cultural diversity of the region and its unique spiritual experience for travelers.

By Bus: This is the most accessible, easiest, and cheapest option to reach Tanah Rata. There are several bus operators that offer daily services from Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang to the main bus terminal in Tanah Rata.
By Car: Driving to Tanah Rata is also quite easy if one wants flexibility or would like to see most of Cameron Highlands at his or her own pace. It will take approximately 3-4 hours from Kuala Lumpur, depending on the traffic conditions and the condition of the roads.
By Train: Take a leisurely ride by train all the way up to Ipoh and then catch the bus or taxi onwards to Tanah Rata. Alternatively, from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh, you may take an Electric Train Service: efficient and comfortable.
