Introduction

Bamboo is a familiar plant to the Vietnamese people, especially in rural areas. Its shade provides relief from the scorching midday heat, its stalks are used to craft useful household items, and young bamboo shoots are a source of food. Because of this deep affection for bamboo, Phu An Bamboo Village was established as the largest bamboo conservation area in Vietnam. In this article, Asia King Travel is excited to introduce you to a place that will make you fall in love with this resilient yet graceful plant.

Information about Phu An Bamboo Village

History

The idea for a bamboo conservation area was conceived in 1999 by Dr. Diep Thi My Hanh. The project was supported by the Binh Duong provincial government and several nature parks in France. Construction began in 2004, and by 2008, the site was officially opened to tourism.

In 2010, Phu An Bamboo Village was awarded the United Nations Equator Prize for its contributions to biodiversity, community development, and climate change adaptation. By 2021, the village welcomed an estimated 30,000 visitors annually for tourism and research.

Location

Phu An Bamboo Village is located in Phu An Commune, Ben Cat City, Binh Duong Province. Functionally, the village is divided into two main areas: a conservation zone and a research zone. The terrain is specially designed with raised mounds for bamboo species that thrive in highland areas, and lower, water-rich zones for those that grow in riverine or wetland environments.

How to get there

Binh Duong Province is very close to Ho Chi Minh City, and the roads between the two are highly convenient for travel. From Tan Son Nhat International Airport, head out onto Hong Ha Street, then go straight onto Pham Van Dong Boulevard. After crossing Binh Loi Bridge, turn left onto National Highway 13.

Follow the highway until you reach Tan An City, where you should turn left onto Provincial Road 744 (Nguyen Chi Thanh Street). Continue on this road and you'll arrive at Phu An Bamboo Village. The total distance is only about 40 kilometers, making it perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway.

Visiting the research area and the bamboo museum

Phu An Bamboo Village is not just a sightseeing spot, it's also a place for the conservation and study of bamboo species. Unlike many traditional museums where exhibits are viewed behind glass, here you can interact with the bamboo directly.

Every visitor is encouraged to plant a bamboo tree and become its "foster parent." While planting a tree may be simple, helping it grow and thrive requires genuine love for nature. That’s the message this conservation area hopes to share with the world.

Relaxing and recreation at the ecotourism area

The tourist area within the bamboo village is well-developed yet remains in harmony with nature. Thatched-roof houses, wooden bridges, and tranquil ponds evoke the peaceful charm of a traditional Vietnamese countryside. Besides relaxing in this serene setting, you can also take part in traditional Vietnamese folk games. When hunger strikes, head over to the food court to enjoy Binh Duong’s local specialties or delicious dishes made from bamboo shoots.

Buying souvenirs

Don’t forget to pick up some bamboo products and souvenirs while you're there. Though simple, they’re incredibly useful (and you’ll have a hard time finding them elsewhere).  Or they can serve as elegant decorative pieces for your home.
