Jianshui, an ancient city in Honghe Prefecture of Yunnan Province, is one of China's famous national historical and cultural cities. With a history of around 1200 years and an abundant distinctive cultural heritage, the ancient city enjoys a great reputation as a "Museum of Old Buildings and Residential Homes" and attracts many national as well as international visitors.
Jianshui is located more than 220 kilometers south of Kunming. The history of this ancient city can be dated from the state of Nanzhao (738-937). About the year 810, Nanzhao State built the city of Huili here. Huili in Yi (an ethnic minority of China) means "vast sea", and in Han language, it is translated by Jianshui.
Jianshui still retains the traditional style of the original city in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) with burial walls and a grid tower. For more than 12 centuries of construction, more than 15 old buildings have remained in its current ancient city. If you come here, you will find many distinctive attractions. Famous tourist sites include: Jianshui Temple of Confucius, Zhu Family Garden, Double Dragon Bridge and National Examination Site of Xuezheng (National Ministry of Education) of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Besides these attractions, the surrounding sites are also attractive, such as the Swallow Cave and the Zhang Family Garden in Tuanshan Village.
